Finished in the highly collectible and striking Western Region Chocolate and Cream livery, this model features Lima’s traditional, robust construction, flush glazing, and crisp side panel printing.
Brake coaches are the crucial anchoring piece for any authentic model train formation, instantly adding realism to an operating layout or collector’s display case.

🔍 Condition Report & Spares Note
  • Rolling Stock Bodywork: Excellent Condition. The chocolate and cream paintwork is smooth and vibrant, with pristine gold lining and perfectly legible running numbers/lettering. The roof is clean and the flush glazing is entirely unmarred.
  • Mechanicals & Couplings: Excellent. The bogies roll completely smoothly, and the traditional integrated Lima plastic hook-and-loop couplings are fully intact on both ends.
  • ⚠️ Important Note (Missing Buffer): The carriage is missing one metal buffer on one of its outer beams. This is a very common and minor issue that can be easily remedied. Standard plastic or metal replacement buffers are widely available on the aftermarket (such as from Hampshire Models or eBay) and can be fitted in seconds, they simply push in.
  • Box Condition: Excellent Boxed Condition. The original Lima cardboard window box is completely solid, clean, and stable with clear plastic film windowing. It displays only negligible shelf wear from storage.

🚂 Prototype History: The Versatile BR Mark 1
The Backbone of British Rail
Introduced by the newly formed British Railways in 1951, the Mark 1 (Mk1) was designed to be the standard passenger carriage across the entirety of the UK network. Following nationalisation, they were a massive leap forward in safety and durability, utilizing a robust all-steel body shell mounted onto a strong underframe chassis.
While British Railways initially tried to enforce a unified nationwide identity with "Blood and Custard" (crimson and cream) paint schemes, regional pride quickly won out. In 1956, the Western Region successfully petitioned to bring back their beloved, traditional Great Western Railway (GWR) Chocolate and Cream livery for their premium named trains and express services.
The Critical Role of the Brake Coach
A "Brake" carriage (such as a BSK - Brake Second Corridor or a BG - Full Brake) was legally mandated on every passenger train. It housed the guard’s workspace, the vital handbrake assembly, and an expansive luggage area for mailbags and parcels. In everyday service, these vehicles were coupled either directly behind the locomotive or right at the very back of the train.

🛣️ Routes, Areas, & Suitable Locomotives
Where Did It Run?
This coach operated exclusively on the Western Region (WR) network, departing from major London Paddington terminals out to the West Country, Wales, and the Midlands. It was a staple on iconic, high-speed luxury expresses including:
  • The Cornish Riviera Express: London Paddington to Penzance.
  • The Torbay Express: London Paddington to Kingswear.
  • The Bristolian: High-speed mainline running between London and Bristol Temple Meads.
The Correct Locomotives to Haul It
To build a prototypical Western Region express rake, pair this coach with iconic steam or early-transition diesel traction:
  • WR Express Steam: GWR King Class, Castle Class, or Hall/Modified Hall Class 4-6-0 locomotives.
  • BR Standard Steam: Heavy-duty BR Standard Class 7 "Britannia" or Class 8 "Duke of Gloucester" Pacifics.
  • Early WR Diesels: Class 42/43 "Warship" diesel-hydraulics or the iconic twin-engined Class 52 "Western" locomotives in BR Maroon or Chroma Green livery.
