A Brief History of the Blue Pullman

The Blue Pullmans were a revolutionary class of luxury diesel-electric multiple units (DEMUs) introduced by British Railways in 1960. Built by Metropolitan-Cammell, these high-speed sets (capable of 90mph) were designed to compete with the growing domestic air travel market.

Distinguished by their striking Nanking Blue livery and white window surrounds, they featured advanced amenities for the era, including full air conditioning, integral soundproofing, and high-quality on-board catering. Only five sets were ever produced: two 6-car sets for the London Midland Region and three 8-car sets for the Western Region.

The Midland Pullman

The Midland Pullman was the flagship all-first-class service operating between Manchester Central and London St Pancras. It famously slashed journey times to just 3 hours and 15 minutes, often being dubbed "The Blue Flash" by enthusiasts.

The service was short-lived, withdrawn in 1966 following the electrification of the West Coast Main Line. The sets were transferred to the Western Region before the entire fleet was withdrawn from service in 1973. Despite their iconic status, none of the original units were preserved.
