An exquisite trio of Hornby OO Gauge super-detailed Pullman coaches, meticulously split from the iconic R1038 Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE) premium train pack. This set consists of "Minerva" (1st Class Kitchen Car), "Cygnus" (1st Class Parlour Car), and "Ibis" (1st Class Parlour Car).
- Coaches: Excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. All paintwork, pristine white roofs, and fine lettering are crisp.
- Features: Early premium tooling featuring functioning individual interior table lamps, sprung metal buffers, and the early screw-on cam-activated close-coupling mechanism (non-NEM).
- Packaging: Housed in the original protective inner foam storage block split from the main train set. The coaches are wrapped securely in their original protective tissue paper.
Please Note: While the foam packaging remains entirely functional and offers excellent protection for transit or storage, it does exhibit some visual marks and age-related shelf wear. Please study the photographs carefully to satisfy yourself regarding the exact condition of the packaging and models before purchasing.
History of the Pullman Company & The Coaches
Founded by George Pullman in the United States, the Pullman Company revolutionized rail travel by introducing unmatched luxury, fine dining, and sleeping cars to the railways. In the UK, Pullman cars operated as premium stock on major railway lines, renowned for their distinctive umber and cream livery, dedicated stewards, and top-tier comfort.
The individual coaches in this set boast rich real-world history:
- Minerva: Built in 1927 as a First Class Kitchen Car. It formed part of the legendary Golden Arrow and Caledonian services. It was later preserved and became a core part of the modern luxury Venice Simplon-Orient-Express fleet.
- Cygnus: Constructed by the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage and Wagon Company, Cygnus was used in the festival train for the 1951 Festival of Britain and later joined the modern VSOE fleet.
- Ibis: Built in 1925, Ibis is one of the oldest surviving steel-frame Pullman cars, serving famously on the Golden Arrow before being beautifully restored for luxury excursion traffic.
History of the Model Set
This specific coach trio originates from Hornby’s groundbreaking 2003–2005 production run of the R1038 VSOE Train Set. This era marked a massive leap forward for Hornby design, debuting their highly detailed K-Type all-steel Pullman tooling. This generation is highly sought-after by collectors for its iconic brilliant-white roof finish and its early-variant, screw-retained close-coupling system which predated the introduction of standard plastic NEM clip pockets.
Suitable Locomotives to Haul This Set
Because these coaches replicate the modern, preserved Venice Simplon-Orient-Express rake as well as historic mid-century luxury trains, they look incredibly prototypical when paired with a wide range of locomotives:
- Modern Excursion / Preserved Era: Mainline registered steam locomotives like the BR Green Merchant Navy Class (e.g., "Clan Line"), Battle of Britain / West Country Class, or LNER A4 / A3 (e.g., "Flying Scotsman").
- Modern Diesel Excursions: Class 67, Class 47, or Class 57 locomotives in heritage liveries (such as Belmond British Pullman, EWS, or West Coast Railways maroon).
- Historic Era (1930s–1960s): SR "Schools" Class, Southern Railway King Arthur Class, or BR-era express passenger steam locomotives.
