🚂 Prototype History: The Auto-Trailer Revolution
What is an Autocoach?
The Great Western Railway (GWR) revolutionized rural and suburban travel by perfecting the "Auto-Train" or push-pull concept. Normally, when a steam train reaches the end of a branch line, the locomotive must decouple, run around to the other end of the train, and re-couple before heading back. [1]
To eliminate this time-consuming task, the GWR designed the Autocoach (also known as an Auto-Trailer). These carriages featured a fully equipped driver's cab at one end. Through a clever system of mechanical rodding and linkages running under the floor of the coach and connecting directly to the locomotive, a driver sitting in the front of the coach could operate the regulator, brakes, and whistle of a steam engine pushing from behind.
This specific model represents the Collett A30 design, built in the 1930s with its distinctive recessed door configuration and elegant arched window panels, bridging the gap between Edwardian railmotors and modern rolling stock.
Correct Locomotives to Haul This Coach
To build a prototypically accurate Auto-Train on your layout, this coach should be paired with smaller, agile, "auto-fitted" GWR tank locomotives:
- The 14xx / 48xx Class 0-4-2T: The definitive pairing. These tiny "Auto-Tanks" spent their entire lives permanently attached to one or two autocoaches on rural branches.
- The 64xx Class 0-6-0PT: These pannier tanks were fitted with auto-gear and were frequently seen hauling up to four autocoaches on busier suburban valley routes.
- The 517 Class 0-4-2T: The older Victorian/Edwardian predecessors that originally pioneered these branch services.
- The 45xx / 4575 Class 2-6-2T Small Prairies: Certain members of these versatile classes were modified with auto-train equipment for heavier rural duties.
